2017 NGSS Summer Workshops for Teachers

Middle and high school teachers

  • Tuesday, June 20 -- Soil and water quality. Community Science Academy directors will discuss cycling of elements through the biosphere, and lead teachers through analyses of soil and water samples. Teachers will work on hands-on projects involving electronics, chemistry, and colorimetry. Teachers will also work with facilitators to develop their own inquiry-based NGSS-aligned lessons.
  • Wednesday, June 21 -- Geographical information systems. Two personnel from NAG Inc will present GIS systems tailored for use by middle and high school teachers. Teachers will work on customizing GIS software specific to their local geographical area.
  • Thursday, June 22 -- Renewable energy. Caltech professor Prof. Harry Gray will talk about the science of solar fuels - work being performed in the NSF Center that he directs. Teachers will work on hands-on projects based on the chemistry, physics, and biology of artificial photosynthesis.

Free for all teachers, breakfast and lunch provided. We will make use of SKIES, a collaborative learning platform. Bring an iPad, Chromebook, or laptop if you have one.

Elementary teachers

 
  • Tuesday, June 27 -- NGSS pedagogy + technology. Create engaging NGSS lessons, incorporating formative assessment, the “5E” cycle, inquiry, and active and collaborative learning technologies. Experience activities involving density, digestion, erosion, and balloons.
  • Tuesday, July 11 -- Earth and Space Sciences. Learn about weather, slow and fast processes, habitats, sun/moon/stars, maps, water, and human impacts; and experience related activities. Teachers will work with facilitators to develop their own inquiry-based NGSS-aligned lessons.
  • Tuesday, July 18 -- Life Sciences. Learn about habitats, ecosystems, life cycles, elements of survival, heredity and evolution, plant and animal parts, and fossils; and experience related activities. Teachers will work with facilitators to develop their own inquiry-based NGSS-aligned lessons.
  • Tuesday, July 25 -- Physical Sciences. Learn about pushes and pulls, energy conversion, collisions, electricity and magnetism, atoms and materials, chemical reactions, light and sound waves, and communications; and experience related activities. Teachers will work with facilitators to develop their own inquiry-based NGSS-aligned lessons.
